Introduction:
As Apex organization Hafed came into existence from 1st November 1966 with the formation of state of Haryana, Initially, it mainly undertook procurement and distribution of fertilizers through the network of primary cooperation societies called as Mini Banks. Thereafter, Hafed activities diversified into foodgrain procurement, warehousing, cold storage, agro-processing and marketing of branded consumer products etc. Hafed has contributed a lot to uplift the social and economic status of farmers and poor people of rural India
Now, Hafed has increased its business manifold and has become a giant organization. Indeed, it is looking after the farmers at all levels. It is also engaged in the service of consumer by providing them quality products at reasonable price. With an annual business turnover exceeding Rs. 3095 Crores, This organization has approximately 1600 employees on its rolls working with in the parameters of a well-defined management plan to achieve predetermined objective that are pragmatic and consumer satisfying. The mission is to play a leading role in serving the economic interests of the farmers of the state by providing and viable and efficient support.
Review of Literature:
A large number of empirical tests have been carried in western countries to exam in the financial health of the enterprise. Patrick (1932) has examined the significance difference in the trend of various ratios, for failed and non failed firms at least three years prior to failure. Other realer researcher who made use of financial ratios includes Winkers and Smith (1935) and Beaver (1966).Beaver (1966) used changes in the market prices of the stock to predict failure. Financial ratio and market price changes will not be viewed to mutually exclusive or competing predictors of failures. So and attempt will be made to explore the degree of association between the two predictors i.e., between financial ratios and market prices. The result of such research would provide greater inside into predicting investors behavior an ultimately into improving there forecasting and decision making ability. Beaver was the first to use univariate discriminate test. He found that various financial ratios cold be useful predictors of failures even five years before the event. Another researcher Altman (1968) using, Z score model reported a very high accuracy rate in predicting failure one year in advance.
A large number of studies have tested bankruptcy prediction models based on multiple linear regressions, which provided evidence in favour of the usefulness of such models. Altman carried out the pioneering work on bankruptcy by improving upon convention ratio analysis and combining several ratios into a single index Z-score, model. Later on, many predictions models were attempted as an alternative to Altman’s model. These include Deakin (1972) Edminister (1977) Olhson (1979) and Casey and Bartczak (1985) Eisenbsis (1977) and Hand (1981) Keldale (1980).
In Indian context a few attempts have been made during 80’s to predict the performance of public sector enterprises. Gupta (1983) made a comprehensive attempt by testing 56 ratios in two independent test samples, textiles and non-textiles. He found that the predictive power of traditional liquidity ratio, for example showed an average classification error almost three times grater than profitability ratios incase of textiles companies. This ratio could be attributed to window dressing and non disclosure of some liability items. Operating cash flow to sales ratios turned out to be more important in this study. Kaveri and Singh (1976) confined their study to small scale units and picked five ratios as most significant. Their model correctly classified 76 percent of the total sample. On the other hand, Srivastva and Yadav (1986) in a comprehensive study picked for ratios as the more significant and there model correctly classified 95 percent of the total sample for first year prior to sickness.
Ritu (2002) made a comprehensive attempt on assessing the financial health of public sector units in India by applying namely the Altman’s Z score model. The sample selected includes 24 public limited companies and data collected during the period of 10 years. She found that some industries are in too health zone some in healthy zone some in bankruptcy and keeping in view the public sector units which would be designated as bankrupt and certain to fail thus need to be privatised.
R. A. Yadav and S.S Srivastva used for financial ratios to predict the performance of PSU, s. Main finding of the studies done by them were: profitability were superior in predicting sickness, cash flow to total tangible assets ratio possessed highest predictive power followed by earning before interest and taxes to total tangible asset ratio, turnover ratio shoed somewhat inferior results than the profitability ratios, predictive accurate of all the solvency and liquidity ratios was much less that that of profitability and turnover ratios, among the solvency and liquidity ratios were more reliable predictor, companies with heavy debt and in adequate equity base were more prone to sickness.
Research Methodology:
The present study will be of descriptive in nature. It may provide an insight about the present marketing strategies of the Hafed.
Statement of Problem:
The problem in question is to evaluate the financial performance of Haryana State Co-operative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (Hafed).
Objective of the Study:
i) The analyse the short-term financial soundness of the Hafed
ii) To analyse the long –term financial soundness of the Hafed.
iii) To analyse the profitability of Hafed.
iv) To suggest the policy-matters for the further of Hafed.
Hypotheses:
i) There is an increasing trend in the short –term financial soundness of the Hafed.
ii) There is an increasing trend in the long term financial soundness of the Hafed.
iii) There is an increasing trend in the profitability of Hafed.
Scope of the Study:
The study will cover the functioning of Hafed in Haryana as a whole from 2001 to 2006.
Data Collection:
The study will be based upon secondary data. The data will be collected from different books, articles, journals, newspapers, annual reports and various supplements of the organization.
Analyses and Interpretation
After collection of data through various sources, different techniques have been used for the analysis of data. A set of simple techniques of statistical analysis such as average, weighted mean, percentage, cumulative percentage, annual compound growth rate and ranking has been used. Wherever appropriate, chi-square test may be used to check the reliability of the results. Furthermore, graphical presentation may be done for its easy grasping. Most of them will be obtained with the help of the computerized packages SPSS (7.5 and 10.0 versions); and Microsoft Excel. Interpretation of data will be based on rigorous exercise aiming at the achievement of the objectives of the study and findings of the existing studies.

2. Review of literature.
3. Research Methodology.
4. Empirical Analysis of Hafed.
5. Conclusion and Suggestions.
